Staying Hydrated: The Benefits

Updated: Apr 15, 2024

Staying hydrated is vital for overall health, as water plays a crucial role in numerous bodily functions. Here are the benefits of staying hydrated, examples of bodily functions that require water, signs and symptoms of dehydration, and the dangers associated with different levels of dehydration:

Benefits of Staying Hydrated:

1. Regulating Body Temperature: Water helps dissipate heat and maintain a stable body temperature, especially during physical activity and hot weather.

2. Digestion: Adequate water intake aids in breaking down food, facilitating nutrient absorption, and preventing constipation.

3. Circulation: Blood is primarily composed of water. Proper hydration supports the circulation of blood, ensuring oxygen and nutrients reach cells.

4. Joint Lubrication: Water provides lubrication to joints, reducing friction and minimizing the risk of joint pain and injury.

5. Detoxification: Hydration supports the removal of waste and toxins from the body through urine and sweat.

6. Cognitive Function: The brain relies on proper hydration to maintain focus, memory, and cognitive performance.

7. Respiration: Adequate hydration ensures that mucus in the respiratory system remains thin, facilitating efficient breathing.

8. Skin Health: Well-hydrated skin is more resilient and less prone to dryness, premature aging, and skin conditions.

9. Heart Health: Maintaining blood volume and viscosity through hydration helps reduce strain on the heart.

10. Mood and Emotional Well-Being: Dehydration can lead to mood swings, irritability, and increased stress, while staying hydrated promotes emotional balance.

11. Cervical Fluid Production: Cervical fluid, especially ES fluid, is a hydrogel, meaning it is made up mostly of water. Staying hydrated encourages healthy production of ES cervical fluid during ovulation which is important for those women who check their biomarkers to avoid or welcome pregnancy.

These are just some of the ways in which staying hydrated benefits body functions/health. If you think you are not hydrated, you should discuss this with your healthcare provider. A health coach can help you figure out ways to stay hydrated and maintain good health.

This post is not meant to diagnose, nor is it a replacement for medical advice. If you think you may be suffering from dehydration, talk to your medical provider immediately. Working with a health coach should occur AFTER you have seen your medical doctor. A health coach can help you implement whatever plan your doctor creates for you.
